Shongweni Model Flying Club is surrounded by more public infrastructure than most clubs and the sun's changing position requires flying from opposite sides of the field morning and afternoon. There are the odd "no fly" days per year when the field is used for other home purposes. Weather and work permitting, members can fly on any of the other day of the week. There are many more advantages and great facilities making SMFC very attractive to its members.
Close to town, on the doorstep of Hillcrest and only 24 km from the Pavilion Shopping Center makes the club central for a large number of metropolitan residents. The Poplar lined entrance drive has a great country ambiance providing that feeling of escape from the rat race. The electronic gate controls access to the facilities and field increasing personal safety.
With plenty of parking in the wide "pit" area making access from the car to the "pit" easy. Loads of take off and landing space! Take off from the center of the runway regardless of wind direction. "Dead stick" engine out landings are much less of a problem on the 200 X 150 meter flat grass polo flying field reducing the risk of damaged planes! There are member groups who not only fly on Saturdays and Sundays, but also during the week like Wednesdays and Fridays, mornings and afternoons.
There are clean ablutions within close walking distance from the field. The Saddle Inn restaurant is open daily serving great breakfasts, toasted sandwiches, burgers, etc, throughout the day. All drinks, can be enjoyed while sitting on the shaded veranda appreciating the country atmosphere.
The pub is open in the afternoons till late. Enjoy a cold beer in summer or a brandy in front of the log fire in winter while chatting with your flying friends. Braai facilities are available outside the pub for SMFC events or for members use.
All in all a great place to fly model airplanes and socialize with friends.
